WORDCOM’S HISTORY

When company chairman George Wachtel founded WordCom in 1981, it was a time of major deregulation in the banking industry. Financial services marketers needed advice and guidance—plus new strategies to open accounts and attract more customers.

George and his associates introduced a variety of new products that were successful because they found and focused on the best prospects.

CHRIS WACHTEL

Chris is President and CEO of WordCom and has been with the company full time since graduating from the University of Connecticut’s School of Business with a marketing degree in 1992 (although he has worked here part time since he was 13). In addition to his duties overseeing the daily operations of WordCom, Chris’ main focus is on the analytics, list segmentation and targeting strategies for WordCom’s clients.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what are the 3 items you would want to have with you?
1. MP3 player
2. Home brew equipment
3. Wilson (ie. a volleyball)

If you won the lottery and could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
Split time between a beach house in Hawaii and a lake house in Northern California

GEORGE WACHTEL

George Wachtel, Chairman, founded WordCom in 1981. Starting out as an English major in college and an Information Officer in the Army, George was Director of Communications for a major insurance company before starting WordCom. He is also known as The Letter Doctor™ and writes a regular column for the ABA Bank Marketing Magazine.

CHARLES E. GROSS, JR.

Charlie joined WordCom in 1986 and since then has served clients in New England. Before joining WordCom, Charlie spent 14 years in the banking industry with increasing responsibilities in marketing, product management, and retail service delivery. He is past president of the New England Financial Marketing Association, the Rhode Island Advertising Club and the Executives Association of Rhode Island. Charlie enjoys golf and riding his vintage BMW motorcycle.

Tim is a Senior Vice President at WordCom. He attended Eastern Connecticut State University majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in marketing. Tim worked at Clarke American Checks for 22 years before joining WordCom in March of 2008. He played high school and college soccer and has been officiating high school soccer for over 30 years. Tim lives in Coventry CT with his wife Cindy and daughter Kayleigh.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what are the 3 items you would want to have with you?
1. Phone to let my family know I was safe
2. Lighter/matches so I start a fire to stay warm and cook food
3. Lots of good beer!

If you won the lottery and could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
Charleston South Carolina. Warm weather 10 months and close to the ocean.

STEVE MORRIS

Steve is Vice President and Marketing Manager at WordCom. Steve has been working in Financial Services for over 15 years, working for some of the largest insurance companies in the industry before coming to WordCom in 2011. Steve grew up near Saratoga Springs, NY but now lives in western Massachusetts with his wife Maureen and two kids A.J. and Katelyn. When not watching the horses at Saratoga and spending time with his family, Steve likes to play golf, go mountain biking, and hang at the beach.

HARRY WALTMAN

As a Vice President at WordCom, Harry has been advising banking institutions on their target marketing needs for nearly a decade. After earning his MBA from SUNY Albany, he worked in the financial services industry for many years. He lives in Ellington, CT with his wife, teen-aged son, and daughter. Spending time with his family and cooking new recipes while rooting on the NY Mets are his favorite activities.

SEAN MULVANEY

Sean brings a wealth of knowledge to the WordCom team. He spent the bulk of his career with ACTON Marketing (Deluxe purchased ACTON in 2013). At ACTON, Sean was the Managing Partner — Financial Services, where he oversaw the sales team, direction of corporate marketing, and the training department. He helped grow ACTON to be one of the leading providers of financial marketing services to banks and credit unions across the country. Most recently, he worked with Speedeon Data and as Director of Sales — National Accounts in the marketing services division at Deluxe Corp. He got his start in banking working on the front line with USBank in 1998 and has also worked as a Program Manager at Information Technology (a division of Fiserv) providing bank software. Sean also holds his CFMP from the ABA school of bank marketing.

Cory is the AVP, Analytics and Data Services at WordCom. He graduated from the University of Connecticut with a degree in Communications and a focus on Marketing. Using results-driven analytics, he assists in the development and implementation of strategies to create and fine-tune programs. He also manages and oversees the analytics and data processing departments to ensure timely and accurate completion of projects. He lives in Connecticut with his wife and two sons.

1. Water (I want to stay alive long enough to get off the island!)

Melanie has been an Account Manager at WordCom since 1996. Before joining the WordCom Team, Melanie was employed at a Hartford-based insurance company, starting out as their Annuity Coordinator and working her way into the sales/marketing department. As Account Manager at WordCom, Melanie coordinates the execution of ongoing programs and provides outstanding service to her clients across the U.S. She also manages the production & mailshop departments, helping to ensure accurate and timely mailings.

Janis is an Account Manager and Print Coordinator at WordCom. She grew up in Northern Connecticut and spent four years at Keene State College in New Hampshire, where she earned a B.A. in English in 1998. Prior to coming to WordCom, she worked at MassMutual Financial Group for 11 years, with the bulk of her time there spent in the Annuity Marketing Department as a Communications Specialist. Janis currently lives in Enfield, CT, with her husband, two young daughters, two dogs, two cats, two fish, and an almost 30 year old firebelly newt. In her free time (free time with 2 little kids—what’s that??), she enjoys reading and spending time with her friends and family.

I would buy houses all over the United States and move from one to the other, depending on which state is having the best weather at the time.

Shannon, who started as an Account Manager at WordCom in May of 2012, attended college at both the University of Connecticut and Manchester Community College, graduating with a degree in liberal studies in 2006. Before joining WordCom, Shannon was an inside sales representative at Aerodyne Alloys in South Windsor, Connecticut. As an Account Manager, Shannon operates as the lead point of contact for clients and ensures the timely and accurate execution of a variety of direct mail programs.

ANNIE SULLIVAN

Ann has been an integral part of our Data Processing team, working as a Data Management Specialist since 1995. Before joining WordCom, she was employed by Southern New England Telephone as a Business Service Representative for 9 years. Ann came to us with a strong background in customer service and also had experience working in the financial services industry as a Service Banker for 5 years. Recently, Ann has begun to transition into her new role as Account Manager. She will be responsible for managing a variety of direct mail projects and will be the client liaison, coordinating tasks to ensure mailings are completed on time and on point.
